How the FBT exemption works and why it is so powerful

The federal FBT exemption is worth understanding in detail because it is often the single biggest incentive available, yet many employees do not know it applies to them. Under the current rules, eligible battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that fall under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles can be packaged through a novated lease without attracting fringe benefits tax. In practical terms, this means your employer can deduct your car payments, fuel or charging costs, registration, insurance and servicing from your pre-tax salary.   • Start with the drive-away price: Get a real quote including on-road costs. If a state stamp duty exemption applies, make sure the dealer or finance provider has already excluded stamp duty from the total.
  • Subtract any direct purchase rebate: If your state offers a cash rebate at the time of purchase, subtract this from the drive-away price to get your effective purchase cost.
  • Adjust for LCT if relevant: If the EV you are considering falls under the fuel-efficient LCT threshold but a comparable petrol vehicle does not, note that the petrol car carries an additional tax that should be reflected in its purchase price.
  • Account for the FBT exemption as an annual saving: If you are using a novated lease, calculate your annual pre-tax salary packaging amount and apply your marginal tax rate to find the annual tax saving. Add this up over the lease term.
  • Include ongoing cost differences: Lower registration fees and any ongoing government incentives for charging infrastructure should be counted as annual savings.
  • Use a net present value approach for multi-year comparisons: Money saved in year four is worth slightly less than money saved today. For a rigorous comparison, discount future savings at a modest rate, around 4 to 6 per cent, to bring everything back to today's dollars.

Common mistakes to avoid

Even well-informed buyers make errors when factoring in incentives. A few things to watch out for.

  • Counting an incentive you are not eligible for: Some rebates are income-tested, capped at certain vehicle prices or only available on new vehicles. Always check the eligibility criteria.
  • Forgetting that incentives are taxable in some cases: Business buyers should check with their accountant, since some incentives may need to be declared as income or reduce the asset's cost base for depreciation purposes.
  • Assuming incentives will last: State rebates in particular have come and gone quickly in recent years. If you are planning to buy in six months, do not assume a current program will still be running.
  • Double-counting the FBT benefit: If you are comparing a novated lease EV against a personally financed petrol car, make sure you are comparing like for like. The FBT saving only applies under a novated lease structure.
